frequently asked questions
Where and how is Suffolk Sea Salt harvested?
Suffolk Sea Salt is handcrafted using the simple, ancient technique of solar evaporation. We gently draw clean, nutrient-rich seawater at Felixstowe Ferry on a flood tide before transporting it back to Poppies Farm, just a stone's throw from the River Orwell.
After being left to settle for around 48 hours, the seawater is then gravity-fed (via a second filter) into shallow evaporation pools in a polytunnel, allowing the natural warmth of the sun and a gentle Suffolk breeze to slowly evaporate the water.
As the salt crystals gradually form on the surface, we hand-harvest them to preserve their distinct structure and clean, vibrant flavour.
Is solar evaporation sustainable?
Solar evaporation is one of the most eco-friendly salt harvesting methods available!
By relying purely on the power of the sun and wind to evaporate seawater – rather than burning gas or using electricity to boil off water in large pans – Suffolk Sea Salt's production process maintains a truly minimal carbon footprint.
Most 'well-known' salt manufacturers in the UK are aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, but Suffolk Sea Salt is already there!
What makes solar-evaporated Suffolk Sea Salt different from regular table salt?
Unlike mass-produced table salt – which is heavily processed, stripped of minerals and treated with anti-caking additives – Suffolk Sea Salt is completely natural and unrefined.
Slow solar evaporation retains vital trace minerals naturally found in sea water, such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. This results in a softer crunch, a more complex flavour profile and no bitter chemical aftertaste.
Does Suffolk Sea Salt contain less sodium than table salt?
By weight, natural sea salt and table salt contain roughly the same proportion of sodium chloride.
However, because Suffolk Sea Salt's hand-harvested flakes have a larger crystal structure and a more concentrated, complex flavour, you often need to use less of it to achieve the same taste impact in your cooking.
Is Suffolk Sea Salt organic?
In the UK and Europe, salt is classified as a mineral rather than an agricultural product, so it cannot strictly be certified organic under soil association regulations.
However, Suffolk Sea Salt's harvesting process is as pure and natural as it gets: 100% natural sea water, zero additives and powered entirely by the sun and wind.
Does Suffolk Sea Salt contain microplastics or contaminants?
We take water purity and quality control very seriously. Prior to evaporation, our incoming seawater undergoes a careful dual-stage filtration process to remove micro-particulates and impurities while preserving its natural mineral content.
The second stage of filtration involves passing the seawater through a 1-micron mesh filter – that's 1/1000th of a millimetre! (For scale, a human hair is around 70 microns wide.) This 1-micron filter effectively removes microscopic particles, fine silt, waterborne bacteria and parasites.
We are very lucky in that raw sewage has not been directly released into the sea around Felixstowe’s bathing areas since 1997, and official testing usually rates the water quality in both North Felixstowe and South Felixstowe as 'Good' to 'Excellent'.
Despite this, before harvesting seawater, we always monitor this live-updated map created by Surfers Against Sewage – one of the world’s leading sewage and pollution charities.
Suffolk Sea Salt is registered with East Suffolk Council, holds food hygiene rating of 5, and strictly complies with all UK food labelling and packaging regulations.
Does Suffolk Sea Salt expire?
Pure sea salt is a mineral and never truly expires. Because salt is a natural preservative, it remains safe to use indefinitely past any printed date as long as it stays clean and dry.
How should I store Suffolk Sea Salt?
Store your Suffolk Sea Salt in a cool, dry place away from steam and direct moisture. The glass jar it comes in is ideal.
Because Suffolk Sea Salt contains natural trace minerals like magnesium (which naturally attracts moisture), it may absorb humidity if left uncovered. If this happens, simply spread your Suffolk Sea Salt on a baking tray and give it a couple of minutes in the oven on a low temperature.
Does Suffolk Sea Salt use eco-friendly packaging materials?
Yes! Respecting the marine environment that provides Suffolk Sea Salt is absolutely core to what we do. We are proudly plastic-free and our glass packaging is designed to be refilled, reused or recycled.
The adhesive used for the paper labels on the jars means they're quick and easy to remove and will leave no residue on the glass.
We also use plastic-free materials for our shipping boxes and packaging tape.
Do you offer trade/wholesale orders?
